Las emociones cumplen un rol fundamental en el proceso que conduce a las organizaciones a alcanzar tal o cual resultado, por ende, es importante el ser capaces de identificar las emociones que se activan al interior de los equipos en respuesta a las dinámicas relacionales, roles que se asumen, prácticas que se sostienen y objetivos que se proponen.
Para entender este papel fundamental de las emociones, pensemos en el termómetro y en su funcionalidad; mismo que no sólo da a conocer la temperatura de un cuerpo, sino que, y sobre todo, proporciona información crucial que determina la toma de una decisión. Por ejemplo; al medir la temperatura de un niño si esta es de 37.5° o de 40°, ¿En ambos casos se actuaría igual? Seguramente no. En el primer ejemplo la acción podría ser poner paños húmedos o aplicar algún medicamento adecuado y observar; mientras que en el segundo caso la decisión sería llevarlo inmediatamente a emergencias. Es decir, la intensidad de la temperatura determina la decisión en cuanto a la urgencia y el plan de acción.
Las emociones son entonces, ese termómetro que toda persona y a través de estas, toda empresa tiene incorporado y el cual guía el proceso de la toma de decisiones. Es decir, si este termómetro emocional comienza con frecuencia, en algún aspecto de la vida de un profesional, a marcar una temperatura de 38°, entendiendo a esta temperatura para el caso como “molestia y/o frustración”, dará claras luces de que hay asuntos que debe atender. Por ejemplo; en una sesión de coaching, en donde se estaba trabajando problemas de impulsividad, el profesional en cuestión, mostró avances en cuanto al uso que le daba a sus emociones, relatando lo siguiente:
“Hace algunas días comencé a sentirme fastidiado, me desconcentraba con facilidad y no tenía la misma energía que me caracterizaba. Al inicio no tenía claro el por qué; sin embargo, al detenerme y analizar lo que me pasaba logré hacer la conexión con un evento que sucedió recientemente, en donde mi jefe tomó la decisión de no delegarme el liderazgo de un proyecto, en el cual creía ser la persona más calificada. Aunque no estaba de acuerdo con él, me di cuenta que no podía permitirme seguir así, esto estaba afectando mi rendimiento y compromiso, y por ende mi imagen dentro del equipo, por lo que tome la decisión de hablar con él para contarle lo que pensaba pero sobre todo para conocer los motivos por los cuales no gané el concurso y así tener información de primera mano (esté o no de acuerdo con ella), sobre la cual trabajar para cambiar su percepción y aumentar mis posibilidades a futuro”.
En este caso, el atender la emoción de “molestia y/o frustración”, permitió identificar que algo estaba pasando y que debía ser resuelto, es decir, lejos de situarse en la queja, tomar la decisión de emular ciertos comportamientos que lo lleven a una posición más proactiva y favorable. Sin embargo, si la emoción no es atendida, se corre el riesgo de aumentar su intensidad, al punto de volverse 40° (cólera); en ese momento, toda decisión que se tome, lejos de ser racional y de conducir al individuo al objetivo o solución del problema, jugará en contra agravando la situación. En el caso del ejemplo, no hablar con el jefe y en la primera oportunidad que este cuestiona una idea suya, reaccionar agresiva y defensivamente, afectando la relación o en su defecto, tomando la decisión de renunciar sin haber analizado lo que esto implica.
En conclusión, las emociones son una herramienta poderosa ligada a comportamientos de alto o bajo rendimiento, y por consiguiente, a la capacidad que tienen las personas y organizaciones de conseguir resultados, “Emoción – Acción – Resultado” van de la mano. Siendo conscientes de esta triada y del termómetro emocional, se tiene la posibilidad de tomar decisiones oportunas y efectivas ligadas a la consecución de metas y objetivos.
